内容简介Cities in China are currently undergoing major changes due to a rapidly changing economy. This rapid economic change has sparked a very rapid increase in urban development within many Chinese cities. Currently, urban planning within China is facing many of the same challenges that cities in the United States face now or have experienced in the past. In both countries, in fact, in all other countries, the integration of land use planning and transportation planning plays a critical role in shaping the urban form, function and sustainability. Planning for one without considering the other can result in increased traffic congestion, inefficient transportation networks and land use patterns, and deterioration of urban livability. It seems obvious that integrating transportation and land use should be a common practice in urban planning, but in reality, integration is not often done. Land use planning and transportation planning are traditionally conducted by different departments or agency divisions, which usually do not communicate. Therefore, it is still a struggle to discuss land use and transportation integration. Questions like how to integrate and to what extent are yet to be answered, even in the United States. However, there are many studies that are being conducted and many experiments that are being made in the U.S. and many lessons can be learned from these studies and experiments. This paper introduces some lessons learned from examples in the U.S., from policy, institutional coordination, planning procedure requirements to site development reviews. Hopefully, these examples will shed some light on planning experiences within Chinese cities that face similar problems like urban growth, land use development boom, and traffic congestion, but to a larger degree.
